The Birth of a New Island

The Birth of a New Island

In late December 2014 into early 2015, a submarine volcano in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga erupted, sending a violent stream of steam, ash and rock into the air. When the ash finally settled in January 2015, a newborn island with a 400-foot summit nestled between two older islands – visible to satellites in space. The newly formed Tongan island, unofficially known as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai after its neighbors, was initially projected to last a few months. Now it has a 6- to 30-year lease on life, according to a new NASA study. Published on Dic.11, 2017. This video is public domain. Credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center/LK Ward

Special Christmass Holiday - West Palm Beach, Florida

Special Christmass Holiday - West Palm Beach, Florida

Floridians can only dream a White Christmas admiring their white and sandy beaches. Their Christmas tree is by sand The tree is sculpted by Team Sandtastic, a world-renowned sand sculpting company from Southwest Florida. In 2010, the city began celebrating the holidays South-Florida style with 10 sand sculptures. But in 2011, Mary Pinak of the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, came up with the idea to create one giant sand tree instead. Sculpted from 600 tons of sand, the City of West Palm Beach’s one-of-a-kind tree (nicknamed Sandi) stands at 35 feet and has received national media attention from “The Ellen DeGeneres ShowEllen DeGeneres Show” and the Huffington Post. Now is in her sixth year. “Every year Sandi’s story – and her sassy personality – unwrap a little bit more and this year has surely been one of the most fun” said Pinak. People were mesmerized by Sandi’s mystery “love" which turned out to be a Great Dane mix named Duke. Affectionately referred to as “a Great Dane for a Great Dame” the “Duke of Sandi Land” made his debut as a 50-ton, 15-foot sand sculpture. Sandi, and her Duke of Sandi Land, are on display in West Palm Beach until Dec. 31st. Source: Keep It Local Florida

Florida, Local decision-making: does it matter?

Local issues are solved by neighbors, not distant bureaucrats. Yes—now more than ever! Whether it’s called Home Rule, local control or even decentralized government, the principle is simple: government closest to the people governs best.

Houston # 1 and the Coldplay

Houston # 1 and the Coldplay

A song for one night, for all those who had to give up their concert in Houston on Friday night, but especially for the hundreds of thousands of people who these days and times are suffering from the devastation of Harvey, the storm that has downloaded Its power of rain on South East Texas. During the live on Monday night at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Coldplay leader Chris Martin interrupted the ladder and turned to the public: "We all grew up in love with country music and of course country music is more or less what It comes to mind when we go to Texas. So this is a new song and we will never play it again. It's called Houston # 1” ….. And there, among the applause and the audience cries of approval, a country melody started accompanied by these words:" Dream when I return to Houston, that very special place, a dream when Houston does not have any problems, in that city where you are thrown into space, dream of when I will return to Texas, Corpus Christi, Harris County, Galveston" And then again "From Miami we send our affection to Houston, we pray for it to face the rain ..." Of course, the fan of Texas fans is that Coldplay is playing Houston # 1 at least once in Texas, although it's hard to imagine now when the band is on tour in the US until October and then moves to South America. Return to performing in the fourth largest city in the country, which will take months to get up.

26th Annual Christmas Toys in the Sun Run.

Hallandale Beach, Florida – An estimated 30,000 motorcyclists toting presents at Markham Park for some very special kids hit the road Sunday morning for the annual 26th Annual Christmas Toys in the Sun Run. The run began at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach. From the casino, the route traveled westbound Pembroke Road to Interstate 95 northbound. The procession continued west on State Road 84 then went west into Markham Park, the final destination. Northbound Interstate 95 beginning at Hallandale Beach Boulevard was temporarily shut down along with Interstate 595 westbound to Northwest 136 Avenue. At Markham Park, the bikers were greeted with a full day of live music, featuring Bret Michaels of Poison, food and merchandise vendors, a huge motorcycle show and a car show. The event cost $10 and one unwrapped toy per person or $20 without a toy. Proceeds from the event will go to the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood. Tiger Woods, the king is back

Tiger Woods, the king is back

Winning for the eighth time in his career, in Orlando, the tournament, organized by the legendary Arnold Palmer, that lasted until Monday due to the tornado that lashed the coast of Florida, Tiger Woods has regained the top spot in the world rankings. He won beating competitors more young (Fowler, Rose, Bradley, Brown Fernandez) who had profited from the crisis following his traumatic divorce to make their way down the list. He won, returning to produce the game of the best day (especially the impressive accuracy on the greens) while those who had been his rival in the golden age (Mickelson, Els, Furyk, Singh) had a low profile for a while. Missing, it is true, the new star, Northern Ireland's Rory Mc Ilroy that, against all odds, chose not to play this tournament, which is among the most important of the year. Mc Ilroy will be in the field in Texas, this week, where Woods will not be. Now the challenge between the two is launched and looming illuminated by the huge talent that unites the combatants.
