YANGON, Myanmar. Ban Ki-moon, secretary-general ONU, has praised Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi for supporting her country’s path to democracy by making a political compromise.

The Segretary-General  said Tuesday, after meeting Suu Kyi,  that he admired her for agreeing to submit an application to change the text of the oath of office. Her party members are expected to take their seats in parliament Wednesday.

He said that in meetings with President Thein Sein and opposition leader Suu Kyi, he encouraged flexibility, wisdom and compromise for tackling issues on which they disagreed.

Ban earlier urged Western nations to ease sanctions they had imposed in reaction to repression under its previous military government, saying that  action would encourage further reform.
